Can I ship coffee from Japan?
Japan Post rules checked across 179 destinations · last verified · guide reviewed
Short answer: Usually as a packaged food, with some destinations setting their own rule. Most of the destinations Japan Post publishes rules for do not single out coffee; around twenty do, typically capping coffee at 5 kg per parcel sent to an individual, treating green (unroasted) beans as seeds under plant quarantine, or prohibiting coffee outright. Elsewhere the destination's general food rules apply. No rule is not a statement that it can be sent.
Roasted coffee, drip bags and instant coffee are shelf-stable packaged foods, and most destinations do not name them. The ones that do are in the table below with Japan Post's wording: the common pattern is a weight cap for parcels to individuals, above which coffee counts as a commercial import.
Green coffee beans are a different product in customs terms: they are seeds, and several destinations list coffee seeds or coffee plants under plant quarantine, prohibited or subject to a certificate. Canned coffee drinks are liquids and fall under the destination's rules for beverages.
An item that no rule names has no specific Japan Post rule. That is not a statement that it can be sent: it may fall under a general category, under the destination's customs law, or under the carrier-wide rules.
Whether a specific product can go in a specific parcel is decided per item: the ShipMate GO app asks the follow-up questions a rule needs and gives a verdict before anything is booked.
Japan Post's carrier-wide rules
These apply to every destination, before any country's own import rules.
No carrier-wide rule names coffee. The full carrier-wide list still applies to anything you send.
Destinations with their own rule for coffee
21 of the 179 destinations Japan Post publishes rules for list coffee in their own import rules. Each row links to that destination's full list.

Not sure about a specific item?
This page lists Japan Post's rules. The ShipMate GO app checks your actual item against them, asks the one or two questions a conditional rule needs, and tells you the outcome before anything is charged. Sending a parcel from Japan? Booking is free and you pay once, after weighing. Shopping from abroad with Shop for Me? Anything that can't ship is dropped from your order before you pay for the goods.
Common questions
- Do green coffee beans count as plant material?
- Yes. Unroasted beans are seeds, and destinations with plant-quarantine rules may refuse them or require a phytosanitary certificate. The table on this page shows the destinations whose rules name coffee seeds or coffee plants.
- Are drip bags or canned coffee different?
- Drip bags and instant coffee are packaged foods. Canned or bottled coffee is a liquid beverage and is judged under the destination's beverage and liquid rules, which may be stricter.
- Does "no rule" mean I can send it?
- No. It means no rule names coffee specifically. The destination's general food rules and Japan Post's carrier-wide rules still apply, and the ShipMate GO app checks the exact product.

The same rules are published in forms built for that. None of them needs an API key. An item that is not listed has no specific rule here, which is not the same as being allowed.
